Doc Moltrup Named
County Deputy Fire Chief

Hasenpusch Appointed Safety Officer

Following an extensive selection process, County Fire Chief A.D. Bell has officially appointed Donald "Doc" Moltrup, Chief of the Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department, as Volunteer Deputy Chief of the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department.

"To the best of my knowledge, this is a unique position in the fire service; I am not aware of a jurisdiction of the size and population of Prince George's County with a volunteer deputy chief of the department," Moltrup said following his appointment.

As one of four Deputy Chiefs of the department, Chief Moltrup will report directly to the Fire Chief. A primary duty of this position is to coordinate the efforts of the Volunteer Division Chiefs in the Northern and Southern Divisions.

Other duties will include:
  • Coordinate/communicate with career division commanders, bureau chiefs, career deputy chiefs and the Fire Chief to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the Department.
  • Communicate the volunteer perspective to the department leadership and provide liaison with the Volunteer Chief's Council and the PGCVFRA as it relates to formulation of policies, goals and objectives.
  • Stay current and enforce all departmental orders, guidelines and policies.
  • Consult with volunteer and career division chiefs and bureau chiefs to determine needs and provide assistance in the areas of: acquisition; research and testing of tools, equipment and personal protective gear; formulation of Standard Operating Procedures; evaluation/recommendation of resource requirements to maintain the department's operational readiness; and evaluation/recommendation of individual, company and/or unit actions for possible commendation and awards.
Moltrup has been chief of the Hyattsville VFD for more than 25 years. By day he works as an electrical engineer at Vitro Corp., a Rockville-based defense contractor.

Fresh out of high school, Moltrup delivered three babies in his first week with the HVFD. His back-of-the-ambulance, seat-of-the-pants obstetrics prompted co-workers to bestow the nickname "Doc" upon the teenager, and it has stuck ever since.

Prior to his appointment as Deputy Chief, he was a Volunteer Division Chief. He also serves as the Chair of the PGFD Volunteer Chief's Council as well as being the chairman of the Emergency Trust Fund Board of Review, which decides on emergency funding for the state's fire and rescue organizations.
