What Was Emergency? Emergency! was a popular 70's television show based on the beginning years of the Paramedic Program in Los Angeles County. The series had two main locations: Fire Station 51 and the ER at Rampart Hospital. Paramedics Johnny Gage and Roy DeSoto were in the lead on Squad 51, with Drs. Brackett, Early and Morton - along with the help of head nurse Dixie McCall - at Rampart. The series opened with a 2-hour pilot movie in 1971 and was a series from 1972 to 1977 on NBC. It had six seasons of regular episodes and many festive two-hour movie specials that followed. The series ended in 1978 with a final two-hour episode where Johhny and Roy were promoted to Captain.

• Johnny Gage, played by Randy Mantooth, Squad 51 Paramedic who loved the ladies.
  
• Roy DeSoto, played by Kevin Tighe, Squad 51 Paramedic and dedcated family man who had to put up with Johnny.
  
• Kelly Brackett, M.D., played by Robert Fuller, the top physician in the Emergency Room at Rampart Hospital.
  
• Joe Early, M.D., played by Bobby Troup, was another doctor in the Rampart Emergency Room; he could also fix curses.
  
• Dixie McCall, R.N., played by Julie London, was the head nurse in the always busy ER at Rampart. In real life she was married to Bobby Troup and used to be married to one of the shows producers.
  
• Capt. Hank Stanley, played by Mike Norell, led the troops at Station 51. He was the longest lasting Captain at the station.
  
• Chet Kelly, played by Tim Donnelly, was "the phantom," who loved playing jokes on his buddies at Station 51. Johnny always tried to get revenge ... "The phantom is going to get his."
  
• Mike Stoker, played by real-life firefighter Mike Stoker, was the trust engineer at Station 51. He drove the big rig.
  
• Dr. Morton, played by Ron Pinkhard, was another doctor in the ER at Rampart.
• Marco Lopez, played by Marco Lopez, filled out the firefighters assigned to Engine 51.
